Basil I, the Macedonian (867-886 AD). AV Solidus, Constantinople mint. Obv. +IhS XPS REX REGNANTIЧM*. Christ, nimbate, enthroned facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels. Rev. BASILIVS ET COnSTAnt AЧGG'b'. Crowned facing busts of Basil, with short beard and loros, and his son Constantine, beardless and wearing chlamys, holding patriarchal cross between them. D.O. 2; Sear 1704. AV. 4.45 g. 20 mm. Brilliant, from masterly engraved dies. Virtually as struck. Good EF.
