Italy. Large teriaca seal, Venice (?). PB. 30.66 g. 42.5 mm. VF. Theriac, an ancient antidote with roots in Greek and Roman medicine, was revered for its powerful healing properties. Composed of numerous herbal ingredients, it was used for centuries as a universal remedy against poisons and various ailments. Its evolution began with Andromachus, Nero’s physician, and it gained widespread use in medieval and Renaissance Europe. Notably, Venice became a major center for its production, cementing its place in the history of medicine.
