Lot 683:
Ostrogothic Italy, Baduila (541-552). AE Decanummium, Rome mint, c. 549-552 AD. Obv. DN BAD VIL[A REX]. Helmeted and mantled bust facing, holding cross on globus cruciger in left hand. Rev. FLVRIAS (sic) SEMPER (the two S retrograde). Badulia wearing helmet and military dress, standing right and holding spear and shield; [X] (mark of value) in right field. BMC 45 var.; Kraus S 195,62 var.; MIB I, 41, 90 b; Arslan -. AE. 8.19 g. 20.00 mm. RR. Very rare and in excellent good for issue. Dark green patina with minor earthy deposits. Good VF/VF. The figure on the reverse probably represents the king, since the same type was accompanied by the king's name on decanummia of the slightly earlier king Athalaric (526-534 AD). The wish expressed in the reverse legend will therefore have been meant for Baduila: 'May you flourish forever!'. (Gemini XIII, 275 note).
