Lotto 970:
EARLY CHRISTIAN (?) BRONZE PHALLIC AMULET
Roman period, c. 1st-3rd century AD.
Cast bronze pendant in the form of male genitals, set vertically.
Lenght: 28 mm. Intact and complete. Lovely desert patina. The possible attribution to an early Christian context is given by the very particular shape of this amulet. It can be noted how the general arrangement tends to represent the shape of a cross, as if, in times of persecution, the owner was referring to a pagan apotropaic symbolism to avoid running into problems.
