Lot 738:
Frankish Greece, Achaea. Isabelle of Villehardouin (1297-1301). BI Denier Tournois series. Obv. Patent cross. Rev. Castle tournois. Malloy 16; Schl. pl. XII, 19; Metcalf 962/972. BI. 0.86 g. 19.00 mm. Clearly readable. Rare as such. Choice example. EF. Soon after the death of Florent of Hainaut (1289-1297) the mint was closed, according to the Registri Angioini, and the first issue in the name of Isabelle did not begin until 1299. Isabella's coins were issued in vast numbers between 1299 and 1301 and their fineness , according to studies of their alloy, seems to have reduced to correspond to that of contemporary coins of Athens.
