Greek Italy. Etruria, Populonia. AR 10 Units. First Metus Group, c. 425-400 BC. Obv. Head of Metus facing, hair bound with diadem; below, X. Rev. Blank (traces of uncertain depiction). Vecchi EC Series 8, 28-32 (O3); HN Italy 117; Sambon 35-36. AR. 6.65 g. 21.50 mm. RR. Very rare, only four specimen from this obverse die listed by Vecchi; and this is possibly the finest known. Superb, brilliant and lightly toned. Graffiti on reverse. EF. The first silver Metus group and its fractions (dated by hoard evidence to the late fifth century), is on a standard close to the silver Attic Didrachm or Corinthian stater, theoretically of about 8.6g. Encapsulated by Classical Coin Grading MS 62.
