C. Caecilius Metellus Caprarius. AR Denarius, 125 BC. Obv. Head of Roma right, wearing Phrygian helmet; behind, ROMA; below chin, XVI monogram. Rev. Jupiter in biga of elephants left, Victory flies above; in exergue, C. METELLVS. Cr. 269/1; B. 14. AR. 3.00 g. 18.00 mm. Scarce. A handsome example, of full weight. Lightly toned. Good VF. This reverse refers to the famous victory of L. Caecilius Metellus over the Chartaginians at Panormus in B.C. 251, when he captured all the enemy's elephants and later exhibited them in his triumph at Rome. (RSC I, p. 20, 14 note).
