M. Nonius Sufenas. AR Denarius, 59 BC. Obv. Head of Saturn right; before, SVFENAS; behind, harpa, conical stone and SC. Rev. PR. L. V. P. F. Roma seated left being crowned by Victory who stands behind her; in exergue, SEX. NONI. Cr. 421/1. B. 1. AR. 3.91 g. 19.00 mm. A superb example, from masterly engraved dies, with unusual hairstyle of Saturn (rare stylistic variety). Great metal, full weight and lovely iridescent toning. Good EF. Sextus Nonius, possibly the moneyer's father, in BC 81 inaugurated the Ludi Victoriae Sullanae, in honour of Sulla's victory at the Colline gate. (RSC I, p. 69).
