Sextus Pompey. AR Denarius, Sicily, 42-40 BC. Obv. Head of Cn. Pompeius Magnus right; behind symbol (mis-struck jug?), before, lituus; around, MAG PIVS IMP ITER. Rev. Neptune standing left, holding aplustre and placing foot on prow; on either side, one of the Catanean brothers, bearing his father on his shoulders; above, PRAEF; in exergue, CLAS ET ORAE/ MAR IT EX SC. Cr. 511/3a. AR. 3.35 g. 19.50 mm. R. Rare issue. Fascinating portrait of Pompey the Great. VF/About VF. All known examples of this issue have a jug symbol on obverse. In this example the symbol appears different, probably due to a striking error.
