Lotto 839:
Great Britain. Elizabeth I (1558-1603). Cast AE Medal for the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Dated 1588. Obv. DVRVM EST CONTRA STIMVLOS CALCITRARE (It is hard to kick against the pricks [Acts ix.5]), Philip II and other Catholics, blindfolded and seated on spiked floor; above, O COECAS HOMINVM MENTES/ O PECTORA COECA (Oh! The minds and hearts of men). Rev. TV DEVS MAGNVS ET MAGNA FACIS TV SOLVS DEVS (Thou, god, art great and doest wondrous things; thou art God alone [Psalms lxxxvi/10]), capsizing and sinking Spanish ships; above, VENI VIDE VIVE/ 1588 (Come, see, live). Eimer 56. AE. 26.32 g. 50 mm. Opus: G. van Bijlaer. RRR. An extremely rare specimen. While the weight and small marks on the edge do not definitively classify this piece as an electrotype, they suggest the possibility. However, after careful microscopic analysis, it can be confirmed that this is an ancient specimen exhibiting all the signs of wear and encrustations consistent with its age. VF. In what was expected to be a one-sided victory, British forces, aided in part by treacherous weather and superior tactics, were able to rout the invading fleet, sinking or capturing more than a third of the 130-ship armada. The obverse depicts Spanish ships in ruin while English and Dutch ships remain to the background; the reverse displays a satirical scene of blindfolded bishops and Pope sitting atop a bed of spikes.
