Justinian II and Pope Sergius I (687-698). AR 1/8 Siliqua, Rome mint. Struck c. 687-695. Obv. Crowned and beardless facing bust, wearing chlamys. Rev. Full monogram of Rome, S in upper left field. Sear 1308A; O’Hara/Vecchi, 21; Berman 6. AR. 0.16 g. 9 mm. RRRR. Of the highest rarity, very few specimens known. Chipped, otherwise. good VF. Sergius I is remembered for trying to strengthen ties with the Lombard Kingdom, which controlled much of northern Italy. During his papacy, he worked to resolve the legitimacy crisis that had plagued the Church due to the usurpation of the papal throne by certain groups. One of his significant actions was his opposition to Monophysite tendencies, aiming to maintain the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church.
