Ostrogothic Italy. Theodahad (534-536). AE 40 Nummi-Follis, Rome mint. Obv. DN THEOD-[ΛHΛTVS] REX. Helmeted and mantled bust right. Rev. VICTORIA PRINCIPVM SC. Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm frond. COI 89b; MIB 81; MEC 1, 141; Ladich, Teodato 24. AE. 9.27 g. 26 mm. RR. Very rare and fascinating issue. Brown patina. Rough surfaces. About VF. While Theoderic carefully upheld a display of respect toward Constantinople in his coinage, Theodahad took a bold step by featuring his own portrait. As noted by Grierson (p. 11), these folles stand out as some of the most remarkable coins struck by any Germanic ruler of the fifth or sixth centuries.
