Lotto 124:
Greek Italy. Southern Lucania, Sirinos. AR Stater, c. 540-510 BC. Obv. ΣIΡIN-OΣ retrograde in archaic characters below and above.Bull standing left on dotted line, head reverted; border of dots. Rev. PVX retrograde in exergue. Incuse bull standing right on rayed ground line, head reverted; border of rays. HN Italy 1723; Mangieri, RIN 1981, group B; Traité II, I 1723. 7.45 g. 30 mm. RRR. Extremely rare double ethnic issue. About EF. The very rare series with the legend ΣIPINOΣ - ΠYΞ consists of four groups of incuse Staters, while the Drachms bear only the ethnic of Siris on the obverse. Siris and its Tyrrhenian foundation Pyxus, previously regarded as political communities allied with Sybaris, are to be regarded rather as entities striking coinage under its hegemony, using the same types of the bull retrospicient. The silence of the sources, however, makes the political situation of that period not easy to read, particularly the kind of control that Sybaris exercised over the defeated Siris, which, from archaeological evidence, turns out to have been destroyed. Pyxus is mentioned by Diodorus regarding its founding in 471 BC by Mycito, and it must have been a very small center that served as a hub for Sybarite trade.
