Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) with Agrippa. AR Denarius, 13 BC. C. Sulpicius Platorinus moneyer. Obv. CAESAR AVGVSTVS. Bare head of Augustus right. Rev. M AGRIPPA PLATORI [NVS III VIR]. Bare head of M. Agrippa right. RIC I (2nd ed.) 408; C. 3 (Fr. 150). 4 g. 18 mm. RR. Very rare and in excellent condition for the issue. Sound metal. Two superb portraits and enchanting light iridescent tone. Insignificant banker's mark on reverse. About EF. Marcus Agrippa was the key figure behind Augustus' military achievements for over thirty years. This coin commemorates him with an imperial portrait, symbolizing not only his status as Augustus' chosen successor, but also his important role within the imperial family. The coin was issued to mark the joint renewal of tribunician powers by Augustus and Agrippa in 13 B.C., a ceremony celebrated in Rome after their recent return—Augustus from Gaul and Agrippa from the East. This was a high point in Agrippa’s career, though his prominence was short-lived, as he passed away the following year.
