Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AR Denarius, 16 BC. Obv. Bare head right. Rev. L VINICIVS. Triumphal arch Inscribed S P Q R IMP CAE, surmounted by facing quadriga. RIC I (2nd ed.) 359. AR. 3.98 g. 19 mm. Banker's mark. Bold portrait, well centred on a large flan. Cabinet tone with golden hues. About EF/Good VF. The reverse representation of this denarius has been the subject of academic debate, as it was unclear which arch was depicted on it. Geometrical analysis of the depiction, has it identified as the arch of Augustus south of the temple of Divus Julius. If we stick to what the coinage shows, we can see an archer characterized by a tall conical headdress that corresponds to the conical helmet worn by Illyrian peoples such as the Dalmatians, who were also famous as archers.
