RIC I (2nd ed.) 274. 3.61 g. 21 mm. R. Rare and seldom offered. Light golden tone. About EF. The presence of Mars' head on this denarius can be traced to the beginning of the construction of the Temple of Mars Ultoris in the Forum of Augustus. The appellation Ultoris (avenger) was given to celebrate the revenge that was perpetrated against Caesar's murderers: Brutus and Cassius.
