ΣΥΡAKOΣIOΝ. Head of Arethousa left, hair in elaborate band; four dolphins around. HGC 2 1325; Boehringer 728 (V360/R496); SNG ANS 248. AR. 16.55 g. 28.00 mm. RR. Very rare and fine style pair of dies. This series is seldom offered. Good VF. This exceptional tetradrachm, one of the final pairs of dies cataloged by Erich Boehringer, marks a shift in artistic style in Syracuse's coinage. Struck during a period of experimentation from about 460 to 390 B.C., it showcases a departure from the Archaic vigor to softer, more naturalistic features. Of particular interest is the focus on Arethusa's hairstyle, with a variety of intricate styles depicted on post-Demareteion tetradrachms. These styles, adorned with accessories like saccus and diadems, represent a departure from the simpler styles of earlier eras.
