Greek Asia. Pharaonic Kingdom. Nektanebo II (361-343 BC) (?). AE 15 mm, c. 3rd century AD. Obv. Ram leaping left. Rev. Scales. Butcher, p. 405, 11; Weiser 1 (Nektanebo II of Egypt). 3.79 g. 14.80 mm. Previously assigned by Weiser to the Egyptian pharaoh Nektanebo II, in office from 360 to 343 BC, who came to power by usurping the throne from his uncle Theos. The attribution of this rare bronze coin is based on an essentially typological basis, but more recent sources suggest a search for the mint beyond the Egyptian borders, particularly in the eastern Levant, where such a circulation of bronze coins seems unlikely in the 4th century BC. The style of the ram, as noted by Butcher, most convincingly recalls the 3rd century AD issues of Antioch in Syria or Damascus. Good VF.
