In the spring of 1250 late (647 H) the Bishop Eudes de Chateauroux arrived in Syria. He was scandalized to learn that the Franks were striking coins with the name of the Muslilm Prophet and with Islamic legends and ordered an end to the practice. In 1251 new coins appeared with purely Christian legends written in Arabic. Dirhams resemble the issues of Damascus retaining the design familiar and accetable to the Muslims but the prominent crosses on dinars and dirhams must have made the new issues easily distinguishable.
