This 'follis' copper type coins, issued in quasi-Byzantine style and bearing Greek and latin legends, were the first Crusader coins minted in Antioch. William of Tyre described quite well the situation at Antioch during his days there: 'the city was surrounded by muslim enemies who cut off all trade between St Symeon and the city. Despite such dangers, military expenses may perhaps have required that currency be issued early on; and trade at Antioch soon increased in direct proportion to its security'.
