Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Nomos, c. 290-281 BC. Obv. Warrior, holding shield and two spears, preparing to cast a third, on horseback right; ΣIM below. Rev. Phalanthos, holding distaff, riding dolphin left; to right, eagle standing left; ΦIΛIΣ to left, waves below. HN Italy 933; Vlasto -; cf. 570-572 (ΦI on obverse); Fischer-Bossert Group 78b, 1065d (V402/R816 – this coin). AR. 7.82 g. 21.00 mm. Superb coin with an enchanting old cabinet tone with a hint of iridescence. Some porosity on reverse. Obverse slightly off flan, otherwise. EF.
