Valentinian III (425-455). AV Solidus, Ravenna mint, 426-430/455 AD. Obv. DN PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG. Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. VICTORI-A AVGGG. Valentinian standing facing, holding long cross and Victory on globe, foot placed on human-headed coiled serpent; across fields, R-V; in exergue, COMOB. Cf. RIC X 2019; Cf. Ranieri 96. AV. 4.34 g. 21.00 mm. Interesting contemporary imitation. Sound metal. About EF/Good VF. Regarding this issue of solidi, Depeyrot reports that several specimens appear to be unofficial contemporary imitations. (Depeyrot 1996, p. 190). Given the particular style of the proposed example, it could be part of this production.
