Lotto 683:
Philip II (247-249). AR Antoninianus, Rome mint, 248 AD. Obv. IMP PHILIPPVS AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. SAECVLARES AVGG. Goat walking left, III in exergue. RIC IV 224; C. 72. AR. 3.76 g. 23.00 mm. Scarce. First two letters in the exergue unusually ligate. About EF/VF. Fascinating issue celebrating one thousand years since the foundation of Rome. Various different animals are depicted on the coins minted by Phillip II in this year; the goat is not accidentally depicted, as it was one of the animals that were historically sacrificed during the ludi saeculares to invoke the protection of the Urbe by the gods.
