Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AR Denarius. Uncertain mint, 32-29 BC. Obv. Bare head right. Rev. CAESAR DIVI F. Venus standing right, leaning against column, holding transverse spear in left and helmet in right; shield depicting eight-rayed star leans against column. RIC I (2nd ed.) 250A. 3.41 g. 22 mm. R. A superb example of this fascinating issue. Porous metal. Good VF. Octavian exploited his descent by adoption from Caesar for his political propaganda. The term 'DIVI FILIUS', literally 'son of a god', refers to the deification that the Senate granted to the figure of Julius Caesar on 1 January 42 BC. Later, having become Augustus, Octavian stopped publicising this lineage, trying to distance himself from the cumbersome figure of his adoptive father.
