Lotto 989:
EQUESTRIAN STATUETTE GROUP
Roman period, Balkans, c. 3rd-4th century AD.
Bronze group composed of two elements; a horseman and his horse. The stylistic rendering of the anatomical details of the horse are accurate. Movement is rendered by the right front leg raised, simulating the animal's gallop. The horseman holds his right arm raised and his left outstretched, as if holding weapons.
Horse: 62x48x24 mm. Rider: 51x31 mm. Intact and complete, lovely green patina. Often the children of soldiers, the Roman children of Illyricum had as toys and models figurines that reproduced their father's activities. The knight defending the limes of the Empire is a figure that also appears frequently in late antique coinage, for instance in the FEL TEMP REPARATIO series from the Constantinian era.
