Gordian III (238-244). AE Medallion or Medallic As, 241 AD. Obv. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. PONTIFEX MAX TR P IIII COS II PP. Gordian in slow quadriga left, crowned by Victory, holding branch and eagle-tipped sceptre. In front two soldiers, holding hose by reins. RIC IV 321b and note; C. 289(Fr. 50). 10.59 g. 26.50 mm. RR. Very rare an superb, from masterly engraved and perfectly detailed dies.
Lovely emerald green patina. About EF/EF. The true status of this coin, as or medallion, has never quite been determined. The lack of S C on the reverse does suggest that it was a special issue.
