Ila/Ali or New Mint
Lotto 164:
Sicily. AE 16 mm, c. 408-407 BC. Obv. AB (retrograde). Nymph standing left, pouring water from hydria over altar. Rev. Herakles standing left, lion skin over arm; pellet to left. Buceti 1. AE. 3.80 g. 16.00 mm. RR. A choice example. Lovely dark brown patina. About EF. This coin apparently belong to an issue previously attributed to Himera, due to a finding near the site of antique polis. Buceti listed this coin as issue of Ila (or Ali), due to an inscription on one specimen ΙΛΑ or ΑΛΙ. On our specimen we clearly read AB. The question remains whether this type was distinctive of a group of mercenaries and perhaps common to several mints or if, as Buceti himself speculates, the name Ila (or Ali) is to be connected to a character and not to a mint and thus, perhaps the letters of our copy could be the ethnic who finally settles the matter.
