Greek Italy. Southern Lucania, Thurium. AR Nomos, c. 443-400 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Athena right, helmet decorated with olive branch; Φ above visor. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙ. Bull butting left; below, bird alighting left; in exergue, fish left. HN Italy 1772; SNG ANS 954-6. AR. 7.82 g. 22.00 mm. Slightly porous. Darkly toned, underlying luster. Accompanied by old label P. & P. Santamaria. Good VF. Seltman, in Masterpieces of Greek Coinage, says these dies are by Phrygillos. The bird under the bull may be a pun for “finch,” the first three letters of which appear on other coins in this series.
