The Last Roman "Sestertius".
Lotto 568:
Ostrogothic Italy. Theodahad (534-536). AE 40 Nummi-Follis, Rome mint. Obv. DN THEO-DΛHΛTVS REX. Helmeted and mantled bust right. Rev. VICTOR[IA] PRINCIPVM SC. Victory standing right on prow, holding wreath and palm frond. COI 89b; MIB 81; MEC 1, 141. AE. 9.43 g. 24.50 mm. RR. An outstanding example of this very rare and fascinating issue. Superb deep emerald green patina. About EF. Whereas Theoderic was scrupulous in maintaining a show of deference to Constantinople in his coinage, Theodahad brazenly introduced his own portrait to the coinage. As Grierson, p. 11, says ‘these folles are the most impressive coins issued by any Germanic ruler of the fifth or sixth centuries.’ (Triton XXIII, 2020, lot 994 note).
