Innocent IV was the advocate of a decisive diplomatic activity aimed at curbing the inexorable advance of the Mongols who, just four years earlier, had pushed as far as Poland (Battle of Legnica, 1241). Shortly after Innocent IV\'s election to the papacy, the Teutonic Order sought his consent for the suppression of the Prussian rebellion and for their struggle against the Lithuanians. The Pope sent representatives of the Franciscans and Dominicans to Asia, who reached Karakorum, the capital of the Mongol empire. In 1243 Innocent IV promoted a crusade against the Turks who had reconquered Jerusalem but the emperor Frederick II was unable to join since he had been excommunicated by Pope Gregory IX. The expedition to the Holy Land was organized by the King of France Louis IX, known as \'the Saint\'. Starting from 1245, several religious were sent to the East on diplomatic missions or as missionaries.
With the papal bulla Ad Extirpanda of 1252 he approved that the Inquisition also used torture as was the case in civilian investigative offices.
