Justinian II, Second Reign (705-711). AV Solidus, Constantinople mint. Obv. d N IhS ChS RЄX RЄGNANTIVM, facing bust of Christ, raising hand in benediction and holding Book of Gospels, arms of cross behind. Rev. d N IVSTINIANVS MVLTVS AN, crowned facing bust of Justinian, wearing loros, holding cross potent set on three steps and globus cruciger inscribed PAX. D.O. 1; MIB 1; Sear 1413. AV. 4.45 g. 20.00 mm. RR. Very rare and superb. EF. Struck during Justinian’s second reign, the detail of the globus cruciger on the reverse of this coin, on which is written PAX, is thought to be an
appeal for peace within the Empire, and an expression of reconciliation from the Emperor after the upheaval of the previous ten years under the usurpers Leontius and Tiberius III. However this was not to be, and the last ruler of the dynasty of Heraclius was put to death along with his young son Tiberius, after a rebellion in the army led to the general Bardanes being proclaimed as the emperor Philippicus in 711.
