Sicily. Leontini. AR Hemiobol, c. 476-466 BC. Obv. Facing lion scalp. Rev. ΛΕ ΟΝ. Barley grain. Cf. HGC 2 687 (Obol); Cf. Boehringer 19 (Obol); Cf. Grose Mc Clean 2325 (of crude style). AR. 0.24 g. 10.00 mm. RRR. Very rare denomination, unpublished in the standard references. Lightly toned. Good VF. In his study of the coinage of Leontini, Boehringer notes a barbarous copy (note 30 and pl. 10, B) of the standard obol (pl. 10, 19). He bases his distinction between the official and barbarous issues based on style, but it is notable that the ‘barbarous’ coin he cites weighs 0.33 g. We think that this coin is an official issue, an extremely rare denomination.
