Greek Italy. Northern Lucania, Velia. AR Nomos, c. 440-400 BC. Obv. Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with olive wreath; behind neck, owl standing left. Rev. Lion attacking stag right; [ethnic around]. HN Italy 1270; SNG ANS 1255; Williams 162. AR. 7.17 g. 22.00 mm. Sound metal. An attractive example, from a particularly well-engraved obverse die, of very fine classical style. Minor corrosion spots on obverse. Brilliant and prettily toned. Good VF.
