Excessively Rare C SAR Denarius
Lotto 215:
Sex Atilius Saranus. AR Denarius, 155 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, X. Rev. Victory in prancing biga right; below, C (partially erased) SAR (A with horizontal bar) and ROMA in tablet. Cf. Cr. 199/1a var. (SAR); Cf. B. 1 var.(same); Cf. CNG 67, 2004, 1194; cf. NAC 61 (RBW Collection), 2011, 848  and note. AR. 3.72 g. 18.50 mm. RRR. Extremely rare, only five examples known. Brilliant and lightly toned. VF. Probably a mistake of a carefull engraver, used to engrave C. SCR (RRC 201). This mistake obviously suggests (pace Crawford) a sequence C.SCR - SAR. About it, see: P. Lampinen, "The Placement of Atilius Saranus in the Sequence of Roman Republican Moneyers," Classical Numismatic Review XIX, 4 (1994), 1; and mostly Pierluigi Debernardi, "Varianti di conio utili per la catalogazione dei denari repubblicani", Panorama Numismatico Feb.2011, pag.11-17 (only four examples cited, all from the same dies, including this coin = d item).
