A Brutus' Supporter
Lotto 390:
L. Servius Rufus. AR Denarius, 41 BC. Obv. L. SERVIUS RVFVS. Bearded male head (Brutus) right. Rev. Dioscuri standing facing, both holding spears and with sword hanging from waist. Cr. 515/2; B. (Sulpicia)10. AR. 3.83 g. 19.00 mm. RR. Very rare and superb, with an outstanding impressive portrait in high relief. Enchanting light old cabinet tone, with golden hues. Area of strike weakness on reverse, otherwise about EF/Good VF. The portrait of Brutus on the obverse represents undoubtedly an expression of great admiration for the tyrannicide on the part of the moneyer, only known from his coins.
