Lotto 354:
L. Papius. AR Denarius serratus, 79 BC. Obv. Head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat's skin; behind, plumed helmet. Bead and reel border. Rev. Gryphon leaping right; below, round shield and spear; in exergue, L·PAPI. Cr. 384/1 (unlisted control marks); B. (Papia) 1; RRSC D177; Banti 2. AR. 3.76 g. 19 mm. RRRR. Of the highest rarity, probably the first specimen known. Well centred and choice. Nick on obverse and slightly porous surfaces. Good VF/VF. The apparently only published example with this symbol on obverse is reported by Banti, although the coin he describes has an incuse reverse. Thus, this may be the only specimen known to have the pairing of the symbols of the two sides.
