Lotto 24:
Greek Italy. Northern Apulia, Arpi. AE 19 mm. c. 275-250 BC. Obv. Bull charging left; below, ΠΟΥΛΑ. Rev. Horse galloping left; above [APΠ]A; below, [N]OY. HN Italy 645 var. (types right); HGC 1 535 var. (types right); SNG ANS 640-5 var. (types right); Siciliano A. 1-10. 6.01 g. 19 mm. RR. Extremely rare variant, with both types facing left. VF. The presence of coins of this issue in the Morino hoard (IGCH 1995 = Crawford, RRCH 54) and in the Italy, 1862 hoard (IGCH 2005 = Crawford, RRCH 28) buried c. 240-230, shows that they circulated in worn condition beside the ROMANO issues. It seems likely that the Poullos whose name is on this issue is the father of the Dazos who defected to Annibal. The change of ethnic to a genitive singular seems to have occurred just before the First Punic War (HN Italy p. 77).
