Greek Italy. Bruttium, Kroton. AR Stater, c. 400-325 BC. Obv. Head of Hera Lakinia facing, slightly right, wearing necklace and stephane decorated with central palmette flanked by two griffins. Rev. KPOT[ONIATAΣ] Heracles Epitrapezios: Young Herakles, nude, holding cup, reclining left on lion skin draped over rock; quiver, bow and club above, ME to left, uncertain letter and bucranium below. HN Italy 2163; SNG Lloyd 615 (same dies); HGC 1 1463; Gulbenkian 130 (same dies). AR. 7.3 g. 21 mm. RRR. A very rare and fascinating coin. Lightly toned and well centred. VF/Good VF. The type of Herakles Epitrapezios shows the hero reclining in the midst of his labors, enjoying a relaxing cup of wine. Phillis Lehmann, in the 'Statues on coins of Southern Italy and Sicily in the classic period' (N.Y. 1946) makes a connection between the coin type and a series of later statues in the manner of Lysippos, linking both to a common source, probably an earlier statue at the temple of Hera Lakinia at Kroton, one of the most prominent sanctuaries in Italy.
