Excessively Rare Gordian III Dupondius
Lotto 406:
Gordian III (238-244 ). AE Dupondius. Obv. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. VIRTVTI AVGVSTI S C. Hercules standing right, leaning on club and holding lion’s skin. RIC IV - (cf. 309, As); C. - (cf. 406, As). AE. 10.50 g. 24.00 mm. RRRR. Of the greatest rarity and unlisted in the standard references. Lovely glossy deep olive green patina. Good VF.
Apparently the second specimen known (cf. LEU 91, 2004, 635).
